“Beautiful cartography, very detailed, simple to read – this is the best Tibet map”
“Very accurate road information with information about distances, extensive geographical content – a significant source in large format”

Himalaya-Tibet-Karte 1:1,6 Mio.

The Himalayas-Tibet map offers an extensive overview of holy mountains, lakes and sites as well as pilgrims’ ways, religious festivals and nomadic festivals. Even hospitals are marked (in this case, the Tibetan Medical Clinic for Tibetan medicine). The map now also contains information for long-distance bicycle trips (purple symbols).

Information for Long-Distance Cyclists

During the difficult crossing of the Tibetan high plateau (Kashgar-Kailash-Everest Base Camp-Lhasa-Osttibet), Roman Beerli and Claude Marthaler collected valuable information from the route for cyclists, which is not recorded in other maps. Gecko Maps is publishing this information for the first time in this new edition.

Roman Beerli
touroman tibet
For 18 months, Roman Beerli travelled by bike from Switzerland to Asia. Through the wintery Balkans and the Middle East, he reached Central Asia, Tibet and South East Asia, where he spontaneously extended the tour and explored more countries. More...

Claude Marthaler
claude marthaler tibet Actually, Claude Marthaler “only” wanted to cycle to Japan in 1994. However, his bicycle decided otherwise ... his 7-year bike odyssey carried him 122,000 kilometres through 4 continents and 60 countries! Four years later, Claude Marthaler set off on another great tour, spent 9 months in Tibet and returned home in the autumn of 2008 after a 3-year trip. More...

Boundaries
tibet_cease_fire_line
The main map shows the current status of international borders and administrative zones at the time of publishing. These are disputed in the Himalayas over wide stretches. As are the borders and status of Tibet.

Historic Tibet
tibet_historical
The historic provinces of Tibet are Ngari, Ü-Tsang, Kham and Amdo. After the Chinese invasion of 1950, the administration of Tibet was reorganised. The autonomy of the region of Tibet (ART) is not even half as big as the historic Tibet. The other Tibetan-speaking regions are part of the provinces of Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan. Further background information and facts about Tibet can be found on the following pages:

Tibetan Writing
tibet_tibetan
tibet_bilingualWichtige Sites are labelled bilingually (Latin and Tibetan). With this map, we are making a contribution against the sinicization of Tibet.

At this point, we would like to give a warm thank you to the Tibetologist Marietta Kind for her help in collecting, interpreting and transcribing Tibetan place names. Marietta Kind is also the president of the Tapriza Verein.

Gormo (Golmud) - Lhasa Railway
tibet_lhasa_railways
It goes without saying that the new railway route from Gorme (Golmud)-Lhasa has been recorded with the most important stations.
